WASHINGTON, D.C. - On Sunday, March 4, 2012, a team of federal lawmakers, Congressional staff and administration officials will face off against federal lobbyists at Verizon Center, home of the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Washington Capitals, for the 2012 Congressional Hockey Challenge™.
Flyers Fans Have Reached Code Orange
Yes I’ve made up a fictitious terror color to get your attention. I think most Flyers fans have finally reached their limit and their patience is waning. It was clear that the fan base had lost their tolerance for defensive breakdowns and soft goals. The team and its fans started the season with great expectations. They had a new goalie in Ilya Bryzgalov and the roster had been turned over with younger talent and that was working, well mostly working.
Flyers Add A Star Destroyer To Their Defense
Dallas defenseman Nicklas Grossman brings needed size and hitting ability, but is Holmgren done?
As the Flyers’ season marches closer towards its conclusion, it didn’t take much to realize that their defense was in need of a sizable player who would present somewhat of an intimidating presence that had been sorely missing since captain Chris Pronger’s season ending concussion.
While it’s next to impossible to replace the size, skill, and intimidation package Pronger possesses with just one defenseman, standing pat was not in the mindset of general manager Paul Holmgren.
G’Nashing Of Teeth As The Trade Deadline Approaches
Just when you thought that the countdown to the February 27 NHL Trading Deadline was going to be closer to “Flatline,” out comes Columbus Blue Jackets’ general manager Scott Howson announcing far and wide that he was listening to offers for team captain Rick Nash.
That news was followed shortly by reports that the right winger submitted a list of teams that he would prefer to be dealt to if an agreement could be reached, a list that is likely not a long one.
Sandy Alderson Speaks and the Fans Sob
Sandy Alderson has joined the Twitterverse and so far he’s posted a few gems. A few days ago he posted this:
“Prepping for trip. Bought 4 like-new tires at chop shop across from Citi. He threw in free wiper fluid. Better than the Wheeler deal!”
Or this one:
“Getting ready for Spring Training-Driving to FL but haven’t left yet. Big fundraiser tonight for gas money. Also exploring PAC contribution.”
And finally this one:
“Wife was not happy with the gift card. Should’ve bought her a box of chocolates.”
“Five Minute Major (In D Minor)” Hits the Ice for Valentine's Day!
It's been four years since the Zamboni's released “Fight on the Ice,” their last full length album that featured 10 rockin' hockey songs. Well guess what? How about another full length album with 15 rockin' hockey songs? According to the Zamboni's frontman Dave Schneider Valentine's Day should now be referred to as “I LOVE HOCKEY ROCK” day because that is the official release / download day for “Five Minute Major (In D Minor).”
Del Zotto Part of a Successful Team Philosophy
Fans are used to hearing that defenseman and goaltenders take the longest amount of time to develop in the NHL. In most cases that’s true and in the case of Michael Del Zotto that’s definitely one of the reasons that he’s quietly become one of the New York Rangers most dependable defenseman after a bit of a journey that saw him temporarily fall out of favor with the New York Rangers fan base.
Rangers Block The Flyers Again
Philadelphia – Flyers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky was hoping to break the Rangers hold on them this season and early on he made a point blank save off a Gaborik one-timer. The Slovak forward would get the last laugh having a 4-point game for the first time this season leading his team to a 5-2 win over the Flyers to keep the top spot in the Eastern Conference and a 5-0 record against Philly this season.
Mike Ilitch “Fired Up” For that Canadian-U.S. Winter Classic Crossover Success
Anytime you are in Detroit you always think about Canada, or at least I do. I know that Windsor, Ontario, is just across the Detroit River and it’s a different world there, or at least a different country. Well now with the Winter Classic being named in Michigan, Canadians won’t have to wait for another “Heritage Classic” they will be able to cross the border.
Here is a listing of what’s in store.

Charlie Moore Hangs With Peter Laviolette Mitt Romney and Others For Season 2
Charlie Moore is the host of “No Offense” and his show has some amazing guests for Season 2. Guests include World Famous Boxer Micky Ward, Coach Peter Laviolette and Mitt Romney. Interesting. To me I had to find out about Flyers coach Peter Laviolette since I cover him and the Philadelphia Flyers pretty closely.
Moore is from Boston and he’s a great self promoter for sure.

Russ’s Rants - The Islanders Playoff Conundrum
The New York Islanders are on a bit of a roll. They are 6-2-2 in their last 10, they have the 6th best power play in the league and their #1 goalie, Evgeni Nabokov is ranked 7th in save percentage. Now here is the issue, where will they be in the standings come February 27th at 3 PM ET? Right now they are nine points out of the 8th and final playoff spot in the East and they have 4 games in hand on the eighth place Ottawa Senators.

Atlanta, Ga. February 8, 2012 New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning is fresh off winning his second Super Bowl ring with a dramatic, come from behind, 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots. Nabokov Dominates Philadelphia in Shootout Win
Islanders’ Nabokov Says Nyet To Flyers, Wins Shootout Russian duels Russian in net battle, but Islanders’ goaltender stops 45 shots to shut out Philadelphia
Philadelphia -- Coming off a lost weekend against a pair of New York area teams, the Philadelphia Flyers entered Tuesdays contest with the New York Islanders hoping not to strike out against the third.
Islanders goaltender Evgeni Nabokov had other ideas, as he put on a goaltending clinic, stopping all 45 shots he faced, along with two shootout chances, to drop the hometown club 1-0 in a shootout.
Wolski, Woywitka Looking to Make Most of Time with Whale
Taking one step back in hopes of making two forward is a familiar refrain.
Left wing Wojtek Wolski and defenseman Jeff Woywitka are hoping that theory works in their quests to get more ice time with the New York Rangers or another NHL team.

Walikology: Letting My New York Tongue Wag
Haven't done this in a while, so forgive me if I stumble a bit.
For a while I've been biting my writing tongue at the longstanding battle between Boston and New York. Two issues: 1) My father has lived in Dorchester for a good majority of his adult life and adopted the Boston teams as his very own, and 2) Using the Big Four major spots in this next scenario: due to many visits there as a kid, and a visit from a goalie named Pete Peeters when I got into the game of hockey as a very serious fan and an accidental teenage player, I am a rabid Boston Bruins fan.
SUPER BOWL XLVI: NEW YORK GIANTS VS. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
It all comes down to this.
On Sunday, February 5, the New York Giants and the New England Patriots will meet in Super Bowl XLVI (6:00 PM ET, NBC) at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. It marks a rematch of Super Bowl XLII, when the Giants defeated the Patriots 17-14 in one of the most exciting Super Bowls in history.
“It’s a great chess match with two elite quarterbacks and two teams with great traditions and great histories,” says NBC’s AL MICHAELS. “It should be a terrific matchup.”
