Free Comic Book Day is a Big Success

Saturday, May 2nd was the first Saturday in May, and that means one thing FREE COMIC BOOK DAY. An industry event started several years back (2002) and keeps growing and growing.

Comic book stores that participated in the event were listed on freecomicbookday.com and this gave collectors an opportunity to find a shop that they might not have known about.

All the major manufactures were participating and a lot of small publishers were also involved.

There were two tiers of comics you could get. The gold Tier had 10 titles while the silver tier had 30 titles, for a total of 40 different books to get.

Included in the Gold Tier were titles like Archie, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the Avengers, and the most sought after comic The Darkest Night #0 which is part of the Green Lantern series and starts off the Black Lantern story.

On the Silver level were classics like Nancy, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Aliens/Predator, and what should be a popular title – Wolverine.

If you looking for some Magna then you were covered also with the Shogen Jump comic.

Most comic book stores were giving their customers several titles for free and it was giving readers a chance to expand their current reading titles. One comic book store I stopped in would put a number of books in your bag depending on how much you purchased, but if you just asked they would choose and give you a comic. At another location the store left the titles out on several shelves and let readers select up to four titles if they were purchasing other books or two if they were not purchasing anything.

Does the promotion work, well it must as it is getting bigger every year, but at one store I visited, I had found the store when I visited the above site. While I was in the store two families came in and were inquiring about the promotion and were also first timers to that store.
