Fans of Turok, and let’s face it there are more of you out there then you want to admit, will really enjoy the book. The book is over 200 pages of hard cover action depict ting comic collectors favorite Native American, Turok.
Before there was Turok Dinosaur Hunter there was Turok on of Stone and if you want to go back over 50 years and have time to kill, you can try to track down all 6 issues that encompass this book go for it. For the rest of us it will be easier and far more cost effective to purchase the hard cover edition from Dark Horse and get them in one hard cover edition with a great looking dust cover.
The book follows the adventures of Turok and his friend Andar. In the book the two Indians face off and try to survive as they are lost in a hidden valley of the Southwest of the United States. They have to avoid dinosaurs, giant reptiles, and other dangerous obstacles.
The series started as part of Four Color Comics and then he got the call and had his own book. The art in this book is great as it is the original work and definitely brings you back to reading early comics, like when I started in the 1970’s.
But the book isn’t just reprints of the comics that run from 1954 through February 1957. It has a great introduction that is written by William Stout. Stout goes into how the early days of comics and how Dell Comics didn’t give artist credits and how it was tracking down writer and artist credits for these comics.
If you like the Turok comics or if you like dinosaurs and what boy growing up didn’t dream about finding dinosaur bones in his back yard, or even better find a real dinosaur while playing in the woods? Well if you liked any of these things then by all means this is a book for you.
THE GOOD
The six original Turok comics, 14 stories in all, and in one place. What more could you ask for? It is well packaged and the hardcover just makes the book feel like just that a book. You feel like you are getting your monies worth and you are.
THE BAD
The bad thing has more to do with the original publications then it has to do with the book. When I read comics I like to know who is doing the art, ink, and all the other essentials but with the old comics’ proper credit was not given to these artists.
OVERALL
This is a great book. If you like the old comics, Turok, or dinosaurs this is a book for you. It has something that every collector will like. And if you look at the cover price and think that it is expensive, look at it this way each of the original six issues in good condition will cost you $15-$20 each plus shipping, if you can even find them.
Cover Art: 4 of 5 great art work reminiscence of the Golden Age Comics
Interior Art: 4 of 5 this is the art work that all modern day comics can trace their roots back to in one form or another.
